No 7 Make Up collection (Photo: Sarah Rider Photography)
In the past I have taken so much make up with me on my holidays and after the first couple of nights I barely touch any of it, because once the heat is on and the freckles are out, I just don’t want to cover up as much! Now we all know that the holiday ‘no make up’ look actually requires some kind of make up, one I am still finding very difficult to explain to the hubby! My recent holiday to Portugal proved that my minimalist make up bag was all that I needed for a beachy stylish look and also for a glam night out.
As always I want to be as transparent as possible in my blogposts – I am a huge No7 make up fan, I have been wearing their products for years and I like the advice you get when you head into Boots, especially when you want to try something new. Their affordable range means that you can try without having to invest too much into a new look. Within this blogpost I mention many products, some I have purchased, some products were free at the time of making a purchase (another great bonus and a great way to try new products) and a few products have been gifted to me by the No7 team.

My first one is not perhaps make up in the sense of how you will look, but if like me you have gels on your finger nails and toes then it’s really important to use cuticle oil. I was using this day and night, especially after my evening shower on my toes – wearing open toe sandals you want your feet to look their best, and the sandy beach can take it’s toll throughout the week on your gels; using this cuticle oil that I have owned now for nearly a year was perfect to bring them back to life!
It’s important to get your base right before applying any make up and I obtained this sample when buying some products earlier this year; I found the Protect & Perfect Lip care became by buddy on this holiday. I carried it everywhere with me, on the plane, to the beach applying throughout the day. Lip gloss can make your hair stick to your lips in the wind, I found with this cream, I could apply (only a very small amount needed) and the cream quickly absorbed – and then if I wanted to I would then add a little lippy. As you don’t need very much I feel this little tube will last me a while.
Just before I headed on holiday I had a spray tan, what this means though is I cannot use any products that have oil within them or the ‘tan’ will not last as long, as the oil breaks down the application – and who wants that to happen?! The No7 team gifted me their HydraLuminous Water Surge Gel which is oil free. I loved everything about this product, including the fresh and clear blue packaging. It’s a clear gel like substance, that has an extremely light fragrance (kind of reminded me of the sea). Easy application to my face and neck and it absorbs fairly quickly. it does leave a little shine, but I don’t mind that, especially for the day when you want that beachy fresh look.
Right, now that we have covered bases, let’s get on and talk make up. If you don’t head on your hols with a spray tan, then I fully get why you would want foundation with you, but the spray tan coverage along with sunshine freckles for me, I really didn’t need to. I do however still use concealer. I have areas on my face, particularly on my upper lip where I need to minimise the freckles and pigmentation to make my lipstick look better. I also like to minimise my freckles of an evening so use it in the nose area and T-zone. I apply directly from the stick and then I blend either with my fingers or my blender sponge – don’t press too hard or you won’t get the coverage you need, just tap lightly so that it lays nicely on your skin. If you need to then lightly apply powder using a brush, I did the very bare minimum of this, as I wanted a fresh shiny look to my make up.
I would normally wear Warm Ivory concealer, but knowing I was going to be darker on my face, I purchased a few shades darker with Honey, to match my skin colour better.
I love a bronzer, in fact I use it so much spring to autumn – I don’t just apply it to my face, I use it across my neck bones and on the tops of each shoulder if I am wearing a sleeveless top of an evening – you can never have too much shimmer! Previously I have used the Shimmer Palette in Rose, however I got to try the Caramel palette and I’ve found the gold and brown tones really work well on my face and neckline with my tan. It also means I can add it a little of my Peach Velvet Blusher too to enhance my cheeks further. I like to buy a fresh new blusher every spring and autumn – ready for the new season. Always try a new colour but stick to what would suits your cold or warm skintone, it’s a good way of changing your look.
Let’s talk eyes – I generally don’t wear much eyeshadow, so depending on my mood, I might use some of the Shimmer Palette above and wipe over my eye lids – I think this is personal choice. Definitely in the day I wear nothing on my eyes, getting in and out of the pool, I want to avoid anything from upsetting my contact lenses, plus I have a tendency to rub my eyes a little whilst sunbathing, so it’s a defo no eye make up zone for me.
Come the evening, well that’s different, I always head out with eyebrow make up, I like them dark and I supposed groomed, so the Beautiful Eyebrow Sculpting Pencil which I have been using for months now, works just fine, and it’s a lot easier to carry around in your bag than a full on eyebrow palette.
I also wear mascara, and my trick here is to use the No7 Stay Perfect in Brown, this is generally my day mascara that I have used for ages, on my lower lashes, but then for the top I was using The Full 360 in Black, I just love how much extra volume it gave me. I’ve recently tried this with the sample I was sent, and it will now become a staple in my kit!
Last up is the lippy, I do tend to wear this down on the beach, well defo as I am heading down and then I reapply before lunch, I think a little colour in your lips makes your tan stand out more. Also for day I have this little trick that I tend to do, because I don’t want to wear any powder on my cheeks, so I dab a little of the lippy to both cheeks and then I either use my fingers or the bottom part of my blender sponge and blend this across my cheeks, this way the colour of your lips and checks work well together. I think this give a fresh daytime look.
I am currently loving the High Shine Crayon – this time of year I either use an orange or a red, at the moment I am into red. What I particularly like, is that I feel I have two products in one; apply it lightly as it’s like a lip gloss, apply it a little heavier and it’s a full on lippy!
