Let’s talk exfoliation.
It can either work wonders for your skin or can leave you feeling red and itchy.
But let me get this straight, it should never leave you feeling the latter and if it does, you’re either using the wrong exfoliator for your skin or chances are you’re doing it way too often.
A good exfoliator should leave your skin glowing; it should reduce any redness and brighten the overall feel to your skin.
So why should you exfoliate?
To put it bluntly… dead skin cells.
And who wants those? They can leave your skin looking dull and lead to blocked pores which ultimately can lead to breakouts – and not just on your face!
So, if you’re thinking lately your make up is just not sitting well on your face, ask yourself when was the last time you exfoliated? Same if you fake tan, if you’re noticing you’re looking a little patchy as soon as you apply it may be your skin needs a good exfoliation first.
Exfoliation helps to remove those dead skin cells and pave the way for brighter, healthier skin to come through.
Here are some of my key tips for that super glowy skin we all crave!
Don’t over exfoliate!
Once or twice a week is more than enough, anything more than that will lead to broken, red skin. Add this to part of your weekly skincare regime, so if you use a face mask once a week combine this with your exfoliating.
Make it part of your routine.
Also, don’t try to rush the process as anymore than this you are putting yourself at risk of damaging your skin barrier.
Choose the right exfoliator for your skin
Choose between a physical exfoliation, which involves removing the dead skin cells manually with a grain or scrub. Or use a chemical exfoliation, usually an acid which dries up the dead skin cells (its not as scary as it sounds!) it should never be painful and is great at leaving your skin much brighter and softer. Both methods are effective, and it just comes down to personal preference and how your skin reacts.
Start off slow
Don’t over do it, see how your skin is reacting.
If your skin is dry or overly sensitive, you need to be careful that you don’t end up stripping the skin as this will just lead to more dryness and irritation. However, if your skin is oily, you probably can handle more exfoliation.
I would always do your research and start off just once a week, gradually building to twice a week if you feel your skin needs it.
