Sex and the City fans across the globe are gearing up for the legendary show’s spin-off, And Just Like That, which will be hitting our screens in December.
The show following the lives of four single (and fabulous) New York women, was a gamechanger on its release in 1998, not just for television but society as a whole. We were presented with these strong, independent women who went about their daily lives not only looking fabulous but challenging the patriarchy as they went.
This was really interesting because many of the popular TV programmes in the late 90s/early 2000s were male-led (Sopranos, The West Wing, Six Feet Under) so it was refreshing to see four feisty female characters that women could relate to and emulate.
15 years on from when the last episode aired, re-runs of SATC are still being shown on Sky Comedy and in boxsets. I can verify this as I’m on my ninth viewing of the series and still can’t get enough of it.
Like millions of others, I can’t wait for the next instalment.
So, I got to thinking, what do you guys need to know about this classy and equally sassy re-union? Take a look below for some hints as to what to expect.
What is it about?
Following on from Sex and the City, the new 10-episode series follows Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) as they navigate the next chapter of their lives in their fifties. Set in New York City (of course), the women are joined by old friends and new ones as they try to live their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.
When does it air?
According to various sources, the series will air in December 2021 but no exact date has been given as of yet. But it will definitely be an early Christmas present so, keep your eyes peeled!
Where can I watch it?
It will be airing on HBO Max in the US and on Sky Comedy in the UK, as well as on Now TV (but you’ll need an Entertainment Pass to get it).
How many episodes will there be?
In total, there will be 10 episodes and at the moment, we’re not sure if all episodes will be released at once or whether they’ll be drip fed to us weekly.
Are all the main characters coming back?
Yes, many of our favourite characters are back for this glamorous reunion including Mr Big, Aidan Shaw, Steve Brady, Harry Goldenblatt, and Anthony Marantino.
One major character that sadly wasn’t part of the re-boot was Samantha Jones (played by Kim Cattrall). There have been rumours about a rocky relationship between Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker (who plays Carrie) which came to fruition when SJP expressed her sympathies on the death of Cattrall’s brother on Instagram. This didn’t go down well and further cemented the feud between the two women.
There has also been some very sad news in recent months after Willie Garson (who played Stanford Blatch) passed away. This rocked the SATC community, and many tributes have been left worldwide for this amazing actor, who brought joy and fabulous fashion into our lives.
Are there any new characters joining the cast?
Yes, there are. In the past, Sex and the City has been criticised for its predominantly white cast and the fact it never addressed issues of race. This is all set to change with the introduction of Nicole Ari Parker (Boogie Nights and Remember the Titans) Sara Ramirez (Grey’s Anatomy and Spiderman), Sarita Choudhury (Little Fires Everywhere and Homeland) and Karen Pittman (The Morning Show and Homeland). The show is hoping to ‘better reflect the city’s real-life cultural diversity’
Nicole Ari Parker, when asked about this, said ‘We’re real people, and they’ve been great to work with, and some of our [storylines] deal with race and deal with real experiences. It’s New York City!”
It’s definitely a step forward from the days when characters of colour only made fleeting appearances in the show, like Dr Robert, who was a great character and deserved more of a role in the programme.
What should I do in preparation?
Ok so in order to prepare for this guilty watch, I recommend:
Watching the trailer if you haven’t already seen it. SJP looks as fabulous as ever and it is guaranteed to get you feeling pumped about And Just Like That.
Binge-watching SATC all over again is a MUST. After losing myself in a 2-hour documentary about the Women of Sex and the City, I went onto Sky Boxsets and downloaded the first season to watch for the tenth time.
Keep an eye out for the release date. We know it will be December (22 days away) but we don’t know the exact date. Make sure you follow @justlikethatmax on Instagram for all the fashionably fabulous updates.
