I don’t know about you but I am a huge fan of documentaries & now we all have a little more time on our hands its the perfect time to add a few to your watched list. There’s so much choice out there but I can’t bombard you with them all so on that note here’s 8 documentary recommendations to get your teeth into!
Three identical strangers
This is one I watched recently & I was hooked from the start. Identical triplets separated at birth & reunited later in life by chance. They were loved by the public & well their story isn’t as accidental as you may think. They were separated on purpose for an experiment & they weren’t the only ones. The reason? Unknown!
It’s both a heartwarming & heart wrenching documentary that makes you question human nature.
Tiger king
Jeez this is a wild ride of a documentary series. I’m not really sure I can summarise the crazy that occurs but here goes.
It follows Joe exotic who is currently in prison for paying to murder a rather colourful lady. He also used to own a zoo which housed hundreds of tigers & other big cats. It follows his well documented life from his polygamous marriages, his attempt to run for office & well that weird murder plot.
Just watch it & let me know what you think of the craziness!
Salt Fat Acid Heat
I’m quite partial to a cooking programme especially one that explores ingredients in depth. This one explores the four fundamental elements to explore basically cooking skills. It debunks common misconceptions & well I just thoroughly enjoyed it.
The host Samin Nosrat is just lovely & really makes the show. I just adored exploring each element with her & learning more about how to cook.
Its an interesting twist on your everyday cooking documentary.
Abducted in plain sight
This one is also crazy but for very different reasons. It’s a crime documentary about the abduction of 12 year old Jan Broberg & explores how it happened not once but twice right under her parent’s noses.
It explores the abuse that takes place by people in the church so it isn’t for everyone but it’s a cautionary tale that shows these things can happen & do happen.
There’s parts of the story that are shocking not just because of the crime but because of the people involved. It’s a very unnerving watch.
Audrie & Daisy
This is a very important documentary that explored sexual assault & rape on college campuses. It’s a huge problem that needs to be highlighted & solved.
It follows the stories of Audrie & Daisy as well as many others who have experienced similar crimes all within what should be a safe environment. It shows the bias the college has towards fraternities & how dismissive people of authority can be.
It’s a heartbreaking documentary that opens your eyes to a whole different world.
Blackfish
This is a documentary that has always stuck with me & has made me change as a person. It follows the captivity of killer whales (orcas) & their treatment in places such as Seaworld. Ex employees discuss what they used to do & how dangerous events were hidden from them.
It ultimately follows the life of Tilikum who has sadly passed away as he is one of the biggest breeding whales in the industry but has also killed people.
It truly makes you think about animal in captivity & makes you question ever spending money in those corporations!
What the health
This might not be for everyone but I found it very eye opening. It explores the misinformation we have been taught about food & how it affects our health.
It’s from the vegan movement so be aware there explore how meat isn’t a crucial part of our diet & how dairy is bad for us. I really think it’s worth a watch & it’s helped a lot of people can their diets.
They do have experts throughout so it’s not just anyone giving you this information.
Louis Theroux
Okay I know this isn’t technically a documentary but anything Louis Theroux produces is worth a watch. He has his whole archive of documentaries on bbc player & you can watch a bunch on Netflix too.
He explores a ridiculous amount of topics but a few stand out ones for me include; mother’s on the edge, by reason of insanity, most hated family & talking to anorexia.
He has a lot to choose from so I’m sure you’ll find something you enjoy.
So there’s 6 different documentaries to get your teeth into. I tried to keep it varied because I tend to watch a lot of crime documentaries & I know they aren’t for everyone. Netflix is great for docu-series too. All these can be found on Netflix. Let me know if there’s anything else you think I should watch.
