As you go through out your life, you will come across only a few books that you can and want to reread over and over again. For me Hourglass by Eric Hennig is one of those books.
This summer I have been trying to catch up with the reading that I was meaning to do throughout the year. This meant that I was reading a lot of heavy books with the latest one being a book on Eisenhower and the Cold War. These types of books are a great way to learn and to feel connected with history but they can also get you down a little. So for me I always like to have another book to escape with. Once I got back home from my holiday I took Hourglass of the shelf and started to read it for the third time. It seems to get better and better with each read.
Hourglass it a fantastic book that is based on witchcraft and fantasy. It is written in a way that it draws you into the book and it makes you love and hate characters, which is when you know you truly have an amazing book. The book is about a group of friends who have magical abilities to different levels and they need to work together to save the world and themselves. However, the main focus of the book is on two main characters one being a young woman called Jasmine and the other being a wise beyond his years boy called Nathan. These characters along with the other ones have a lot of depth to them, so by the end you really care about the characters and what happens to them. The book is a great fit for those who love fantasy, the vampire diaries and Harry Potter. It has a way drawing you into the book and it through the characters deals with a lot of heavy issues in a positive way so you will feel connected to at least one character no matter what your childhood was like and not alone with some of the things that you have been through.
The beginning of the book is excellent and really pulls you in as you want to find out why they are doing what they are doing and how this all came about. Which is explored in the rest of the book. Also the start has strong Shakespearean vibes. This adds to the magical feel of the book and allows you to enter the new world through it. The middle of the book is very good and really explores the world and allows you to further understand what is going on and why the characters are the way that they are. It is truly brilliant and you also get to see the characters really grow up which makes you even more invested in them. Then there is the end. It has a way of speeding up the passe which sends adrenaline rushing and gets your heart pumping as it is really intense, however, the real diamond of the story is the final couple of sentences, oh wow you don’t see that coming. The twist really leaves you just wanting to get the next book and find out what happens next.
This is truly an incredible book and I recommend it to everyone as a way to escape and to get lost in a fantasy land. I can’t wait for the next book and for anything else that Eric Hennig writes. Five star book!
