The fuss is valid, let me tell you!
So the lovely people at BeYou have kindly gifted a few items over the last year or so and each item I’ve loved for it’s own unique reason, but their monthly period patches are an absolute god send – thank you BeYou!!
Let’s first start with a little bit of a backstory into my life as a bleeder (that’s how I’m going to refer to those of us with periods from now on!) I was blessed with periods at the tender age of 10, so at 23 I’ve been to my fair share of bloody rodeos. At the age of 21 though I started noticing how significantly more painful my periods were becoming, at first I was like it’s probably a one off, oh a second time my body’s hormones might be a bit off, could be stress related but by the time I was on my third excruciating, bent-over-in-agony period I thought maybe a trip to the doctors won’t hurt. My main concerns were the C-word, Endometriosis, infertility – you know all that fun stuff.
My GP told me I was silly for worrying about infertility at my age of 21, someone as young as me shouldn’t be concerned about “that” yet – that being baby-making. This doctor was a woman, which really does frustrate me – she patronised me to the high heavens, made me feel so invalid and stupid, and yes I know not every woman wants to be a mum but CHRIST am I not allowed to worry or have that concern cross my mind. So yeah got palmed off by that doctor.
Let’s try again shall we? Second doctor, male and young – didn’t know how to feel, thought I’d be ignored again. BUT hallelujah he actually listened to me, made me feel valid in my concern and referred me to a clinic that could do all sorts of tests and scans to see what was going on. FINALLY, someone doesn’t say “oh it’s just period pain”.
Off to the clinic I go, my consultant (fancy doctor) was this very elderly, definitely nearing retirement but lovely man, who I thought might palm me off like the first one but he explained my options in detail and even cracked a few jokes! So long story short, after a 3 hour MRI (during which I had a nap and a cry) and plenty of blood tests turns out I have cysts in my ovaries which causes the extra pain so since then periods have been an absolute joy (hope you sense the sarcasm) Since then I’ve tried to find solutions to the pain that doesn’t involve constantly taking painkillers, and that’s where BeYou perfectly fit into my life.
Welcome BeYou Monthly Patches!
The huge plaster looking things, use really snazzy technology to slowly release cramp numbing goodness over 12 hours – don’t ask me how that works, I’m not that intelligent! All I do is place the patch on my stomach, slightly to the right because that’s the busier ovary and let the patch work it’s magic. It does feel quite hot and tingly at first, it’s a strange sensation, but it definitely helps reduce the pain. There were days I still felt a bit nauseous but pain-wise I coped. I would definitely recommend the patches, really bad cramps or not; they actually have worked for this bleeder! I’ve even got my mum using them!
Thank you for reading this far, thanks for being here!
As always, must dash x
