Sleep is something a bit hit and miss for me, I can either put in a decent 10hour sleep shift or I can have a night where I can’t drift off and my sleep is very broken. As a result, I’m a total grump and I take ages to come around. I’m also pretty sure I’m made up of around 80% caffeine when I have those nights.
In an attempt to try and get a decent night’s sleep I’ve tried most things that are around at the moment. These are the things that have helped me – Don’t knock them until you try them, have an open mind!
A hot bath – I like mine like the pits of hell, absolutely boiling! If I haven’t turned pink, then it’s just no good. For me personally getting into the routine of a hot bath, pjs on and then getting into bed helped. I like to add a few drops of lavender in there as well – My mamgu swears by the stuff so I thought why the hell not! Don’t forget.. NO PHONES!! Light a candle or read a book, the idea is to get the body and mind relaxed.
Sleep Apps – I tried a few and the one that really helped me was Headspace. Lights off, get comfy and just listen to the sleep story. There are a few stories on there, so you won’t get bored and did I mention that its FREE!! Everyone loves a little freebie. The idea of the sleep story is to get you to meditate for sleep, helping your mind rest.
NO PHONES – Yes I feel you, its hard but it will be worth it. Its 2020 and who doesn’t have a smart phone? I can honestly say that mine is stuck to me pretty much all of the time and I’m guilty of using mine whilst I’m in bed too just as I’m trying to go to sleep or if I wake up in the middle of the night I’m scrolling through Facebook or Instagram. Essentially the blue light that’s emitted from your phone tricks your body into thinking it doesn’t need to produce as much melatonin which helps you sleep. The Sleep Foundation recommend that we should turn off our electrical devices at least 1 hour before we go to bed, but hey you do what you feel works for you.
Magnesium Relax – Bedtime Sleep Supplement to Aid Relaxation. Now I’m not one of those people who thinks that ‘sleep aids’ actually work but I can 100% recommend these. It’s all natural and it includes, magnesium, chromium picolinate & alpha-lipoic acid. Essentially you get a good night’s sleep and you wake up feeling fresh. The tiredness and fatigue are no more! Now I don’t know if it was psychological to start with but three tablets an hour before bed really helped me. You can get them from PRP Supplements
Hopefully these tips will help in the long run, you may think they’re daft and they ‘re pretty much ‘what everyone says to try’ but if you give them a chance I promise they will help in some way.
