What even is it?
Cottagecore is an aesthetic that can be interpreted and taken in many different ways. However, to simply sum it up it is an aesthetic that romanticizes a more traditional way of life with nature at its heart. The common themes include plants, animals, sustainability, rural living and nature.
Ways you can get on board…
There are literally hundreds of ways you can jump onto this aesthetic. I am going to give you a few simple ways to get started on cottagecoring up your life.
I find cottagecore fashion ties in really well with the dark academia fashion but just a bit lighter. You definitely do not need to splash out on buying fancy clothes for this aesthetic, perusing your local charity shop or second-hand places online will work perfectly. Buying second hand also ties well into the sustainability aspect of cottagecore!
- Summer Hat
- Linen Shirt
- Fisherman’s Pullover
- Summer Dress
- Knitted Cardigan
- Flower Crown
Basically, just think natural colours, faded materials and simplistic styles, just nothing too harsh or modern.
You don’t need a massive outdoor space to be able to create a garden. I am writing this post in mind that not everyone will have the cash to splash or the space to create a full farm! If you don’t have much room then just start by buying some fresh herb plants these will really add to your aesthetic and are great to cook with. You can generally get them in your local supermarket.
If you have a bad track record with plants, why not get succulents? Most of them don’t need watering super often and are therefore pretty invincible.
There is not a set stock list of plants for this aesthetic just get any that take your fancy. Try heading to your local garden centre to get some to support local and you can actually see them in person! Plants are the easiest way to get into this aesthetic and trust me just a few plants will make an amazing difference in your living space.
This will tie into another suggestion later but having a picnic basket (complete with a blanket of course!) will show you are one with nature!
The light from candles creates such a natural ambience but also having rustic style candle holders will bring in nature.
Tea is a big part of this aesthetic and pairing lush herbal teas with a vintage teapot will definitely add to the whole vibes.
Similarly, with the fashion, lots of things do tie into cottagecore and this is just a starting point. Again, scour charity shops and grab anything that you think ties in perfectly.
Spend more time outside
Cottagecore is all about nature and wildlife and where best to experience that outdoors! Take spontaneous walks in the wilderness and just breathe it all in and live it.
Buy locally-sourced foods
It can be more expensive to buy locally but just start with a few items. Doing this is great for the environment and is much more sustainable. Also, try to buy food that is in season to be even more sustainable!
Go on picnics!
Maybe enjoy your freshly baked food outdoors on your own or with a friend. This is the perfect opportunity to you use picnic basket!
Take up a needle and thread
Why not learn how to embroidery, knit or sew? This can be a super fun hobby and helps with the sustainability element as you can fit up your own clothes.
Enjoy tea and books
Find a good book and enjoy some hot tea. Maybe read outside under a tree if you have good weather.
