This pandemic has brought with it many things, but one thing that has affected us all is: the global lockdown. With most of us living the #laptoplife and working from home, many people have found themselves demotivated and uninspired because of the space around them (myself included!). In light of this, I decided to spruce up my bedroom/office and decorate my shelves and I love them! So, I am going to show you how I created pinterest-worthy shelves and how you can too!
1. Create a moodboard
Before you start decorating it’s important to generate an idea of what you actually like, so, take to a look on pinterest or Instagram and browse! I recommend looking for at shelves that mirror the ones that you already own or are thinking of purchasing.
2. Pick a colour scheme
Are you bored with black and white? Try adding some pops of colour!
Whether it be one accent colour or two, introducing a colour theme using the existing elements of your room (or your own tastes to guide you) will bring your shelf to life. You can add accent colours through backsplashes or accessories, so remember to buy and gather things within the same colour palette before putting them straight onto your shelves. Also, incorporating multiple shades of a colour will help bring more richness and depth to the shelf.
Pro tip: Try adding objects with different textures and finishes to the shelf to add detail and break up the monochromatic look!
3. Play with heights
Adding objects of different heights captivates the eye, whilst ensuring that your shelves don’t look too cluttered and stocky. Personally, I used picture frames and candles in various sizes to decorate my shelves and you can see that it looks great (if I do say so myself!) Just remember, that less is more when decorating! Avoid adding too many objects on your shelves, to ensure you maintain a clean look. Baskets are a great addition if you have a lot of things to put on your shelves – they’re functional and fashionable!
Lastly, when putting your items on the shelf, start with your tallest and largest items first, with the largest items in opposing corners on each tier to break up the space.
Pro tip: Take a step back after adding your objects to each tier to make sure that they blend well together and that you like them!
4. Choose objects that are meaningful to you to display
While aesthetics are great, it’s important that you love your shelves too! You are the one that has to look at them at the end of the day! So, to make the shelves your own, style them with objects that represent what you like, who you are and what makes you happy. While I know that pamper grass is all the rage right now (and I can understand why because it looks so chic), I also knew that it meant nothing for me to add it to my shelves because it wasn’t in my colour scheme nor doesn’t excite me, instead I opted for candles and I have a whole shelf dedicated to my DVDs. Yes, I still watch DVDs and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon haha! Choose things that represent your personality, so you will be happy!
5. GET SOME GREEN!
Adding plants (real or fake) to your shelves brings in fresh colour and life into your shelves. Also, having plants makes you more inclined to actually admire your shelves when you’re watering them – plus they look great in pictures!!
And that’s it! You have pinterest-worthy shelves!
With these five simple steps, your shelves will be both aesthetically-pleasing and joy-inducing! Above all, your shelves are reflections of who you are and what you value, so remember that when decorating and have fun!
