10 ways we know Christmas is on the way
It’s that sort of cold.
A key indicator that the man in a red suit is on the way? The weather. All of a sudden, we hit November and the wind has blown away Halloween for another year and we’re left with a bitter chill in the air and find ourselves constantly reaching for the heated seat button in the car. Not just the single number temperatures, but rain in abundance too. Not quite the perfect weather for your Christmas pub crawl.
The rumours of Christmas specials and the battle of the Christmas adverts. This is a sure sign we are on our way to the mistletoe. The television is you shining star of the living room at Christmas for many families, some have some traditions such The Grinch, Oliver, Royle family and this year a new Gavin and Stacey special but for many others, it’s relaxing with baileys or mulled wine and going with the flow, letting BBC choose the film for them.
We know supermarkets are keen when it comes to Christmas. The day after Halloween, the aisles are red and green and stocked full with chocolates and only-at-christmas treats but they’re food guides don’t come until much later. Pages and pages full of everything you’d love but you’d never be able to eat it all on Christmas day. The adult’s version of circling and Argos catalogue, for sure. (for sure?)
Fuzzy warm lights, everywhere.
In dribs and drabs, slowly neighbourhood streets become lit with a warm, fuzzy, twinkling hue. is that true? Christmas trees peeping through windows and garages perfectly lined with snowfall effect lights. The highstreet draped in their signature lights and shop owners playing their part too. Regardless of the cold, there’s something beautiful about walking amongst the lights …even if you do have 15 layers on.
Your Wardrobe = Sparkles.
You’ve got the Christmas party date and it’s mission find an outfit in full force. The only caveat, it must be sparkly. Sequins, tassels, glitter – anything that makes me resemble a Christmas tree, I’m open to the idea of it. Sorry, Mr Postman for all the not-quite-right dresses you’ll be delivering, and I’ll be sending right back!
The scales are popped into the cupboard.
Put them away. Until January at least. You’ve got to enjoy those 15 pigs in blankets and be carefree. Yes, summer bodies are made in the winter but don’t turn down a mince pie because Ibiza is lurking. Get involved, Slimming world will be easier in the new year when it’s full of new members!
The pub atmosphere
For me, nothing screams Christmas like your local pub. The Christmas eve tradition or even just popping in to warm up after a wintery walk. Your favourite Christmas tipple and the open fire. The Christmas songs on Karaoke and the smell of a pub roast lingering. The Christmas quiz with pigs and blankets at the interval, you’ve got yourself perfect Christmassy date night – right here!
Your Christmas lunch menu
Out with the BLT and in with the festive sandwich! It’s become a bit of a thing these last few years, who has the best Christmas sandwich? There’s nothing like working through the list; M&S, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Co-op… the list is endless. I’m 2 down this year and the Brie and Cranberry from M&S is definitely stealing the top spot. In December, in my opinion, there’s no time for a non-festive lunch, especially when Greggs are selling pots of pigs in blankets, all don’t rush at once!
Shopping centres get REAL busy
There’s nothing like it in the lead up to Christmas. People everywhere, somehow everything you need out of stock and let’s not even talk about trying to park! We’ve been gifted the beauty of online shopping and oh how beautiful it is. Amazon prime and even same-day delivery in some cases. I mean, take my money! Gift wrapping service? Oh, take even more of my money. As I get older, the need to buy hundreds of presents has dwindled away, I’m here for the food (If you haven’t realised already) and the family time. My Christmas shopping list is firmly made up of the little people in my life and Prosecco.
There’s nothing like a Christmas classic. However, if you work in retail and have been listening to Christmas songs since early November, you’ll probably disagree with me BUT it is a definite sign of Christmas! There are some staples; Driving home for Christmas, Last Christmas, All I want for Christmas is you, Bublé of any kind… but there are some real underdogs sneaking through too! John Legend’s Christmas Album, Ariana Grande and Justin Biebers is also up there for me too.
All this Christmas talk has got me very excited, I best go get my tree down.
