June 3rd sees the start of Love Island. Whilst everyone is eagerly anticipating who this year’s contestants are going to be for the next 8 weeks, I do have a confession to make – I bloody hate the show!
I have tried to watch it once before – I’m not like one of those kids who won’t try a kiwi because they don’t like the look of it. When I did watch it though, I turned it off after about 8 minutes because I could literally feel my IQ level go down as time went on. Some of the things that were being said on there just blew my mind – and not in a good way.
Reality shows like this have never appealed to me. Sometimes I think it highlights the vanity in people and how bitchy and nasty people can be. I know a lot of people who do watch and live for it when it comes on in the Summer and that’s fine, but when you start talking about it to me I will literally tune myself out and my thoughts will drift to what I need to get from Tesco on the way home.
One thing that gets me is how poorly it promotes body confidence. Love Island usually have men and women on there who are slim or who have mega six packs. I think this can project a message to the younger generation that this is what we’re supposed to look like and it can put pressure on teens to constantly look good. I think it would have for me at that age too as I was quite impressionable and I know I would have been easily influenced by this. I maybe would be even now.
For me, the two suicides of past Love Island contestants has kind of overshadowed the launch of the show this year. With the Jeremy Kyle show being axed because of the suspected suicide of one of its participants, a lot of people are discussing the future of Love Island and I, like many others, for the sake of the mental wellbeing of its contestants think it should be axed too.
However, this seems unlikely given that producers’ eyes will be on the popularity of Love Island and the fact that it has people gripped throughout the Summer, and even beyond that. I for one won’t be tuning in this Summer and I shall be muting a lot of certain words on Twitter for the next 8 weeks or so!
I like to think that I am not the only human being in the UK that doesn’t like watching it! If you are someone who doesn’t like watching it, please comment below and let me know.
