This was always going to be THE interview of the month, year, decade…and it lived up to expectations.
The interview was agreed with by Meghan and Harry to get their side of the story across as to why they left the Royal Family and address those headlines and rumours that have been rife since they started seeing each other. The interview was conducted by Oprah Winfrey, a woman I already have a lot of respect for.
In this post, I want to talk about the main points, controversial or not, that really stood out to me during the almost two hour programme on ITV. A lot of people I know watched it on CBS prior to the ITV slot, but I chose to watch it on primetime British TV as I was literally too tired to stay up for when it aired in the US!
First of all, I need to comment on how radiant Meghan looked! She looked stunning and her dress was beautiful, she looked like a woman who was finally at ease and looked like the whole world was off her shoulders.
What I felt while watching Meghan speak, was how incredibly strong she was to talk about such controversial yet heart breaking subjects of her time as a Royal since she started dating Harry. She stated that she had no clue of what life was going to be like being part of the most famous family in the world. Completely just but I would think that Harry would have surely talked to her about the magnitude of the life change she was about to make when marrying a member of the Royal Family. But maybe that didn’t happen, who knows. We never know what goes on behind closed doors!
Meghan even said herself that you have no idea what goes on behind closed doors and how someone is and can be feeling. This is something we all need to take on board, not just in this case, but in our everyday lives too. When watching Meghan talk so openly about herself feeling suicidal and not getting any help from anybody, it brought a tear to my eye and I could only imagine the dark thoughts that circulated in her mind and how alone she felt, even when her husband was by her side. As she was speaking about that time in her life, you could tell it was all still so raw for her, mental health is something that just doesn’t disappear on its own or quickly, having thoughts like Meghan had aren’t easy to forget about. It was heart breaking, it really was.
What is even more shocking that the media have played on this since the interview and (I won’t mention names or newspapers” have accused her of lying. The irony of it being all these accusations being made on International Women’s Day. I can only questions people’s morals and values when they don’t believe that a pregnant woman felt suicidal. It’s too incomprehensible to think about.
Meghan had talked about Kate and a headline where Meghan had apparently made Kate cry during a bridesmaid fitting. Meghan stated that it was the other way around and that Kate had sent a bouquet of flowers as an apology. This was the perfect example of how the media had twisted it to make Meghan look like the bad guy. I can’t really comment on whether I think this is true or not, but I think this is up for debate.
Harry then made his entrance to the interview for the last part. It was then announced by them both to Oprah that they are expecting a baby girl. THE PERFECT FAMILY. Along with their two dogs and chickens. It’s just adorable!
One point which was raised by Meghan before Harry made an appearance was that a member of the Royal Family had questioned and was concerned about the colour of the baby’s skin. This is overwhelmingly shocking and disgusting that somebody had the nerve to have that discussion with the baby’s father. Meghan and Harry chose not to say who that person was. As Meghan said, it would be seriously damaging to that person in particular. For Harry to have been asked that it beyond incomprehensible and it was absolutely horrendous and degrading behaviour on that Royal’s part.
Is it any wonder that Harry chose to take his family away from all this monstrosity and keep them safe? Harry did what any father and husband wants to do and that it protect and put his family first. Nothing but respect for him for doing that.
When listening to Harry discuss the relationships with his father and brother, it was incredibly sad to think that relationships seem to have broken down. Surely as a father himself and with the risk of history being repeated, Charles would have been very understanding of his son’s wishes to leave?
The interview was a piece of TV we won’t forget in a hurry. This has caused ructions and ripples through the media and all over the world. What I have said in this post you may or may not agree with, and that is absolutely fine. But one thing we can all agree on is that we all want Meghan and Harry to be happy.
But can we all take a moment to appreciate Oprah?! What an interviewer and she really delved in and asked the most probing of questions. She truly is an icon.
I can only hope that we all learn something from this – you never know what goes on behind closed doors and always be considerate, people do have feelings, no matter what.
