Kanye West for USA Presidency
If you have a profile on any social media platform you have no doubt seen meme’s and video clips of Kanye West’s Political Rally speech in South Carolina recently. What you may or may not have seen is the full 48 minutes of Kanye discussing all things ‘political’. Most of what Kanye said had a strong religious message, from quoting the 10 commandments, to detailing messages from God himself! His full speech contained very little in the way of politics or what you would normally expect a prospective president to say. There was nothing about education, healthcare, or finances (outside of the abortion piece), or any other policies/changes that he would implement. The speech was more akin to a stand up comedy show at The Glee Club, or a general chit chat some artists have during gigs to be intimate with their audience.
So, what are Kanye’s plans for Presidency?
His first announcement centred on the excessive use of painkillers in the USA. Kanye claims that doctors in the US are rewarded at the end of the year based upon the number of drugs they prescribe and disseminate which has led to a high dependency rate amongst patients. He didn’t come up with a resolution for this issue, more so just detailing his own addiction to prescription drugs.
Kanye become very emotional during his second order of business, abortion. This will undoubtedly be the clips you’ll have seen many times this past week. Describing how his wife and he had considered abortion themselves on their first child North, until he received a message from God.
Following on from the abortion piece, Kanye concluded with a short but sweet announcement that marijuana will be free for all! A real crowd pleaser!!
Kanye’s view on Abortion
Ok, so this element of his speech took up nearly half of the whole rally! He talked passionately for 22 minutes on the topic, during which he cried for about a minute when he described how his mother had also saved him from abortion when his father didn’t want the pregnancy to continue. It was the, ‘There wouldn’t have been a Kanye West cos my dad was too busy’, statement that really struck a chord with him and the crying began. It didn’t last long before he was back on track with his plans to combat abortion in the US.
Kanye’s plan to reduce abortion rates in the USA begins with a financial incentive for women to keep their unborn child; they will receive $50k per year per child! Now, I am no Treasury Secretary, but when the annual birth rate in the US is already 3.7 million, that is a considerable sum of money for the government to find! And the payments don’t stop there. Kanye stated $1m per child, so that would meant the $50k per year is for 20 years! I’m no psychic, but Kanye will not be president in 20 years’ time. The maximum term for a US president is 8 years (assuming re-election at the 4 year point). So what would happen to those payments should someone else become president? Would a new president simply stop the payments leaving families financially worse off with children they didn’t really want to keep? There will be a whole generation of unwanted babies just so the parents can receive financial gains. Is this fair on the children? Will child abuse/abandonment increase significantly in the US during Kanye’s rein? Where will Kanye find all this extra money?
Kanye’s Mental Health
In 2016 Kanye was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, something he has fought against and claims he was misdiagnosed. Although, recently he has accepted this diagnosis and spoken openly about how it affects him. His wife, Kim Kardashian, has been by his side every step of the way and tolerated lots of abuse in the public arena. Even claims that she is trying to control him by making out he has a mental illness that doesn’t really exist. I’ve never watched her TV series, so have very little opinion on her. But she does seem to be loyal to him, standing by him through good times and the bad.
One trait I did notice throughout the speech was his need to control everything! He didn’t want people taking photos with a flash, he didn’t want people talking, and he didn’t want people whispering! He interrupted himself on several occasions to reprimand audience members, and even asking them to leave if they wanted to talk. You could clearly see his patience wearing thin. Throughout the entire 48 minutes I kept asking myself, ‘Why is nobody stepping in to take control of the situation?’, ‘Why hasn’t someone taken him off stage for a short break?’, and ‘What is the intent behind this rally?’
Would I let my loved one do something like this with a serious mental illness? Well, I would… but under the strict guidance and support of a medical practitioner. I would employ a political team that were trained to recognise an episode and to intervene if necessary. I would also ensure that my loved one wouldn’t be making a laughing stock of himself by rambling on about personal issues instead of addressing political polices.
Would I vote for Kanye?
Definitely not! This rally was nothing more than an ego massaging event that left me with more questions than answers. Kanye doesn’t have any political experience (not an issue in its entirety, look at Trump and Regan), he clearly hasn’t bothered to research any political issues since he first announced that he would run for presidency (back in 2015!), and he hasn’t employed a decent campaign manager/team to assist with his journey. This man has had 5 years to work on this presidency campaign, yet I could have done a better rally with a Google search and 10 minutes’ worth of preparation! Kanye should stick to what he knows; rapping and preaching! He was amazing at Coachella in 2019, not so amazing in South Carolina in 2020. Amen to that!
