A styling session with a stylist we all need from time-to-time. Consider booking a session in 2021 for your own style management.
Every now and then it’s good to get some professional advice on your styling – a personal 1-2-1 styling session with a stylist can really boost your confidence. Even as a qualified stylist myself, I love others having a go at styling me.
It can give you a whole new perspective on clothes or accessories that you may never have considered before. Now whilst it’s fun to have these sessions with friends or family (I get that you’ll think it’s great quality time together), however they may steal precious professional styling time (paid or unpaid) which will deflect from the attention you should be having on YOU!
What I would recommend, if you have the confidence to do so; is go to the session on your own and then afterwards (because you’ll know the time it’s booked and how long it will last) arrange to have coffee or lunch with your girlfriends. Helping you to ‘download’ your experience and chatting through what you’ve learnt, can help reinforce what advice you were given, plus you can also go shopping together with your new knowledge. #winwin
A styling session with a stylist
The more you prepare in advance of your session, the more you will get out of it.
Even if the service is completely free, say from a department store, the more information you can provide them in advance; about you, about what you love and not love so much.
Tell them your budget – they should if they are any good, ask you how much you would typically spend say on a pair of tailored trouser, a pair of jeans and a day dress. Be honest! If you’re not, they will pick things you can’t afford and then you may not buy anything. If you do buy (let’s be honest we can all get carried away on that in the moment excitement), you can return the items. If it’s a small independent boutique, be sure to check the returns policy, you may find it’s store credit only!
Even if it was a gifted present to you; be sure to ask if any of the original cost can be redeemed against purchases you make at the experience. Don’t be scared to ask that – as the gifter I would be looking for that when I buy it, so that I know the recipient would be able to take something home that they love. It’s all part of the fun – so don’t miss out!
“AVOID FUSSY DETAILS AND TOO MUCH JEWELLERY, YOU WILL BE HALF-NAKED FOR MOST OF THE SESSION ANYWAY.”
One consideration you really must do before attending a personal styling session is have your bra size checked.
It’s such a fundamental part of styling to have the correct size, you certainly don’t want to lose time talking about that in the session – believe me, that’s where they will start! I recommend booking in with Bravissimo, they are the only ones I would recommend – if you have your own favourites, then do that – but do it in plenty of time before your day.
On the day, wear something you can easily get in and out of, I generally wear a dress with trainers. Avoid fussy details and too much jewellery, as you will be half-naked for most of the session anyway.
Wear plain nude underwear that fits you properly – that way whatever they suggest you to put on, your underwear should not show though – black and lace can be limiting. If you require different bras for different style tops, take them with you. I often head to a session with a large tote bag with different slips, bras, perhaps even a different pair of shoes.
They may write up the session for you or maybe not if it’s a free service – so don’t forget a notebook and pen. I highly recommend you get them to take a photo on your phone of each outfit too.
Have fun, get out of your comfort zone (if only for a couple of hours) and be open-minded. A styling session is more than just trying on some clothes, it’s a gateway to exploring your personal style, just for you!
