Here we are yet again, at the height of December. With Christmas pending and New Year’s Eve looming, last-minute party invitations are coming in left, right and centre, it can only mean one thing: it’s time to plan that party outfit. While we may have already dived headfirst into the conundrum of writing our New Years Resolutions, let me remind you that the 31 days of December are not yet over, so let’s embrace, enjoy and savour these last moments of bliss before Dry January begins. Who’s with me?
When I think of December parties, I think of a luscious silk number encrusted with sequins and embroidered with feathers, large voluptuous hair, a matte red lip and a teeny tiny pair of stilettos. Do I like the sound of this outfit? Yes. Would I wear this myself? Meh. Maybe not.
See, I’m a girl of comfort. Dressing for a party – or any occasion – means dressing to feel empowered. Let’s be honest here, why would we want to spend our days sucking in our stomachs and faffing about when we could be wearing an outfit that makes us want to get up to THAT ABBA song and have a boogie.
My dream party dress may not be made to suit my figure but it certainly hasn’t stopped me from shimmying around the house singing out of tune to Mariah Carey. It’s a gorgeous Sezane number. Short but flared with long billowing sleeves that tighten at the wrist. These dimensions make such a simple dress so interesting without being too extravagant. My favourite things about the dress are the sheer sleeves and the metallic foliage and quite frankly, I feel like a million dollars which is exactly what we all should feel.
On that note, we’ve made it to my first and most important piece of advice. No matter the style, colour, or material, ignore all the trends for a second and plan an outfit that YOU are going to feel comfortable in. That’s what makes an outfit truly beautiful. Who cares if society has told us that certain bodies and ages have to dress a certain way? They don’t get to choose what you wear, only you do. In the words of Paddy McGuinness, the power is in your hands.
Like myself, you might have spent the last twenty days pinning your way through Pinterest on the hunt for outfit inspiration. Only, I don’t actually have a party to attend (no shame) but that hasn’t stopped me from finding my favourite party outfits to help make your job a little easier. Want to be comfortable but visually striking? You may want to consider dressing up in a power suit or a jumpsuit. They are one of my favourite party outfit options of the moment. They’re figure-hugging without making you feel like your body is being suffocated and more importantly, you have plenty of room for a food baby, if your party includes food (or a post-party McDonald’s). There are so many options on the high street which means no matter your style preferences, you can add a bit of zhuzh with a pop of colour or a splash of sequins, or you can keep it simple with an all-black ensemble, perhaps with a slice of velvet to make it feel more festive.
If you’re looking to save money, why not consider creating an outfit from what you already have in your wardrobe. If you’re left crying on your bedroom floor thinking you have nothing to wear (the classic pre-night out ritual) you can buy the missing pieces to an outfit you already own. Easy. This could be accessories to match a dress you already own or vice versa.
I’m all about timeless trends and one that I’ve become besotted with during 2019 has been silk. No matter what form it comes in silk oozes luxury and paired with a bold lip you’re looking at the ultimate festive outfit. Trust me. You could go all out with a silk slip dress or pair it back with a silk blouse or silk shirt.
