Do you have a personal brand? Unsure?
OK so – you are a person, yes? Then Babe, you’ve got a personal brand.
Let’s dive a bit deeper – do you have goals? It could be that you’re in a job and want to get to the next level, or are an entrepreneur and want to grow your business…
If you have professional goals then your personal brand is an integral part of achieving them.
Why? People buy from people. They want to know that you align with their core values.
When your messaging is mixed, or you’re trying to talk to everyone, you end up talking to no one.
Having a personal brand that is authentic to who you are makes everything you do so much easier – your actions speak to your intentions and the people who are meant to work with you will be able to find you.
I help women step into their ability, own their story and feel confident about themselves. A lot of this work is about personal brand… and yet it’s one of the parts where women come unstuck.
Sometimes it’s because they lack the confidence to stand in their truth. Sometimes it’s because they’ve spent a lifetime listening to what everyone else thinks they should be, and not who they truly are.
And I know how hard it can be to show up with a personal brand that’s totally in alignment. I spent a long long time suppressing the fullness of who I am, because I was conditioned to be a version of me that other people needed.
And some of those people I no longer speak to. Because when they say ‘you’ve changed’ – you haven’t changed at all. You’ve actually got back to the real YOU. And the real YOU lives for you and the people she is supposed to serve.
If you aren’t sure where to start with your personal brand, here are my top tips for you:
Make a mindmap
What are the things you’re good at? (And don’t you dare tell me ‘nothing’!) What are the things you love? What are the colours/phrases/activities that light you up? Write down all the things that make you happy. Write down what you want to achieve with your brand and – importantly – how you want your customer to feel when they see your brand.
Once you have your feelings, colours and favourite things mapped out – create a moodboard. Pinterest is a good place to do this. Add in anything that gives you the feels.
Tap into your intuition
This is one habit we’ve really forgotten. Like Glennon Doyle explains in Untamed, we look to Google for the answers instead of listening to ourselves. So it’s time to tap into your intuition. And this can be really uncomfortable. Because when we are alone with no distractions, we really hear truths we’ve been hiding! Start to ask yourself questions, and make a note of when you feel good, or when things feel ‘off’.
What aligns with you?
Just because a certain aesthetic is popular, doesn’t make it you. When I was creating my brand visuals, a certain aesthetic was very much ‘in’. But it wasn’t me. And I knew that in order to attract the clients who really needed me, I had to have a brand that was created with soul. You need to be super passionate about what you do and who you help. You aren’t for everyone. And that is absolutely fine. But you are for someone. And they won’t be able to find you if you aren’t showing up fully.
Invest in professional help
When you’re starting in business, funds are tight. But sometimes it is worth investing. A graphic designer can take the dream logo you’ve got in your mind and turn it into a reality. A style coach (like me) can help you create a wardrobe, or a brand shoot look, that’s totally in alignment with who you are.
Where do you want to show up?
Something I see happen to ambitious women is that they get social media exhaustion. If you stretch yourself too thin, eventually you’ll snap! So there are two things you need to ask:
- Where is your ideal client hanging out? That’s where you want to be. Focus on one or two platforms – show up, engage, network – and you’ll achieve growth without the burnout.
- What type of content speaks to that client? Having key content pillars and batching your content will save you a lot of time AND mean that every post is ‘on brand.’
Above all – you’ve got this. If you have a vision, it’s for a reason. Some days – it’s hard to remember. It feels like no one is listening. But they are. If you’re showing up with integrity then your authentic personal brand is working for you in ways you don’t even know yet.
