I’d been wanting to blog about the experience I’ve had with my side hustle for a while now, but it never felt like a good time. When I saw the list of blog suggestions in Mel’s email last week, I knew it was a sign from the universe for me to finally write about what I do.
So, I’ve been a distributor of products from a company called Federico Mahora (FM) since February of this year. Someone I knew had actually set me up back in 2019 but I did nothing with my account except let it expire. I know exactly why I didn’t do anything with it – the dreaded ‘F’. Fear. Fear of what someone might say about me. At 33 years old I still worry about what people may think of me and the things I do like they are the ones paying my bills! (TBF, I think that is a whole other blog post on its own!) I know that this is a network marketing company so understand that these things can often come with such a bad rep. I think that’s where part of the fear stemmed from actually. It seems so silly that I felt like that at the time because I didn’t think anything negative about the lady who had signed me up. In fact, I actually purchased some perfumes from her and fell in love with them.
Being the most sceptical about the network marketing scene I do have to say, one of the things I loved about FM was how transparent it all was. I’d often get other network marketers for different companies sliding into my DMs trying to tempt me to join their team… The generic; “Hey girl, I love your page and I think you’d be great at what I do, message back so I can share more info.” It was always so secretive and none personal! Like babes, why are you hiding it all? I’d have a snoop on their page and they’d never explicitly share things like start up costs or how much you could actually earn – you’d have to “DM” them to find out more! I think that’s the sort of behaviour which has contributed to the bad rep. FM distributors are always so clear with how it works so there aren’t any hidden sign-up fees when you decide to get set up.
Fast forward 2 years and I’d been following a lady who does FM on Instagram. I watched her for a while and because I’d already used their products before, I knew that what she was saying about them was true. I was feeling the need to do something else to earn some extra pennies and so I got in touch with her to find out more. After an exchange of messages, I felt excited to get started. For a completely free opportunity I decided I had nothing to lose.
So how does it all work?
I set up a free account with FM, share their products with friends and family (and their friends and family…) and take orders. I am able to purchase at cost and so sell for an RRP and keep the difference – that’s the easy instant cash. Commission is also made because each product is worth a certain number of points and the more points you get, the more commission you’ll receive. There are also bonuses depending on how much commission you end up making in your first months. If you then sign up another person with FM then any points they make will also be added on to your total. Nothing is taken away from them though and in fact, you still have to be active in sales to benefit from their points too.
My first month…
A few people I knew had heard of FM perfumes already and so once I’d spread the word that this was my new little business venture, I managed to drum up enough interest to be able to place my first order. My first order alone made me just over £65 of instant profit! To me that’s a hell of a lot of money just from selling some really lovely, high quality perfumes.
I used a little of that instant cash to get myself some of the samples so that I could send them out with orders and when my first delivery arrived, I was so excited! I’d done Avon years before and was reminded of how much I loved the organisation of it all – checking the order, organising it for my customers and packaging it up all nicely ready to be delivered. It sounds really silly, but I honestly loved that side of it, I found it to be really positive for my mental health too. Especially during a time where I really wasn’t feeling happy in my everyday job. I love to organise things and so to have this to switch off to was just what I needed. And the bonus was that I was earning some extra cash too.
Fast forward a couple of months…
Now almost 4 months in and I was loving it! I’d used my instant cash and commission to build up a small collection of perfumes for myself, signed up my first teamie and I’d even begun to venture out and try some of their other products so that I could recommend more to my customers. I was gaining more confidence on my socials and made a real friend in my upline. I don’t think I had really thought about the long term of joining this company because I had just enjoyed being in the moment with it all. I’d been putting in regular orders each month, set up a Facebook group (Jess’ Scents & Things) and even held my own virtual ‘Secret Sale’. It wasn’t until we had some tiling done in the kitchen that I realised I could actually use the money I had made from FM to cover the cost of them! We had already budgeted for these tiles as they had been in the works for months prior but it was a nice realisation to know that my side hustle had actually been able to pay for them.
When I’ve seen other ladies share their successes with FM as their side hustle, I have preferred to hear about the small wins because for me, that always seems much more attainable and also relatable. I think people can either become overwhelmed when hearing about the six figure earners and don’t think it can be true or believe it to be a “get rich quick” kinda thing but it’s not like that at all. I know that the earning potential with FM is absolutely huge but it takes a lot of dedication and consistency to get there.
I’ll be honest, it all slowed down a bit for me for over the next 3 or 4 months or so. I was finding work really difficult due to being heavily pregnant at the time. I was just constantly tired and struggled to concentrate on anything other than the minimum that was required of me! Pretty much a walking zombie, I stopped sharing it all and decided I’d get back into it when I felt ready. Even though I’d gone off the grid for a while, I still managed to take a couple of small orders, so it was there in the background and also brilliant for me to order from when I’d had birthdays come up.
Another positive I noticed when I went on this unintentional break, was that there was no pressure from anyone telling me I needed to make ‘X’ amount of sales. It was my own business and although I’m part of a bigger team, I didn’t have (and have never had) any targets to meet in order to stay in the game. This was the beauty of it being a side hustle – it didn’t matter if I had to put it to one side for a while. And it was nice knowing I wasn’t going to get any hassle from my upline in doing so.
Getting my mojo back…
So now we are in October and it’s the run up to… dare I say it… Christmas! Now that we have settled into being a family of 5, I’ve got my FM mojo back and I’m taking orders again. I thought it would be the perfect time to earn some extra cash for that crazy time of year when, let’s face it, the majority of us will over spend and regret it at some point over the festive period. I read a statistic somewhere this week that said around 33% of us will get into debt over Christmas – it makes me really sad that this is the pressure we put ourselves under but it’s so easily done isn’t it? I’m hoping to use the money from my side hustle for the Christmas food shop. A small goal but one I feel is achievable. I’ve managed to bag myself a stall at the annual Christmas PTA event at the local primary school – completely out of my comfort zone of course, which I decided was the best place to be if I want to make something more out of my side hustle.
In short, I’ve loved my time with FM. I’m not naive and know that isn’t the experience of everyone who joins FM but I’ve honestly made some great friends, been part of some brilliant and motivational training sessions and discovered so many different perfumes that I didn’t even know I needed in my life! Trust me, if you haven’t tried them before then you’re absolutely missing out! Here’s a link to my online shop if you’d like to have a nosey at all of the products we sell.
Our scents are actually made using a higher percentage of perfume oil so they last longer, which when coupled with the fact that there isn’t any fancy or expensive branding makes them much better value for money.
I know that this industry can be frowned upon and I still get nervous about it all sometimes but I figured that I’m a decent person who knows right from wrong and as long as I’m not hurting anyone I’ll continue with my side hustle because it’s right for me.
Is there anything you have on the side to make some extra money? I’d love to hear about it!
And if no one has ever talked to you about perhaps joining FM before then let me be the first. Even if just for Christmas to help take the load off then I’d happily chat some more about it all.
Thanks so much for reading!
